With the first day of fall quickly approaching, I want to share some of my favorite fall picture books. Each of the books on this list help draw the reader into the fall season and many provide extension activities to help celebrate the season!

Personally, I love the fall season. For my family, fall beckons us to apple orchards, farms, pumpkin patches, camping trips and trail hikes where we soak in the changing of the season. I am so grateful for the beautiful way nature reminds us to slow down and welcome the growth that comes from change.

The books shared below are some of my favorites that I find myself coming back to each season and I am so excited to share these reads, along with many others, with our Little Pines community this fall!

1. Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Park

2. Count Down to Fall by Fran Hawk

3. Orange Pear Apple Bear by Emily Gravett

4. Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell

5. The Little Yellow Leaf by Carin Berger

6. In the Middle of Fall by Kevin Henkes

7. Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson

8. The Scarecrow by Beth Ferry and The Fan Brothers

9. Fall Walk by Virginia Brimhall Snow

10. Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert

I believe that stories and books are one of the best ways for children to fall in love with learning. I love researching children’s books, reading reviews, and deep diving to find just the right story to invite children into a new learning experience. If you are interested in more amazing reads, the books in the list above come from a few of my favorite children’s book resources:

Read A-Loud Revival

Sarah McKenzie does phenomenal work finding great read-a-loud books for children that strengthen language acquisition while helping children fall in love with reading because the books on her recommendation lists are captivating! I am an AVID follower of Sarah McKenzie’s work.

Camp Read-a-Rama

I had the honor of seeing Michelle H Martin, Ph.D., one of the founders of Camp Read-a-Rama, present at last year’s Natural Start Alliance conference. She is one inspiring woman! In addition to the real-time work she does developing programming, leading a team, and facilitating reading camps for kiddos, she and her team maintain a fantastic booklist for parents and educators!

Backwoods Mama

Josee has created a wonderful list of books that focus on connecting kiddos to nature. She also provides parents with great ideas on how to get kids having fun outdoors through her blog!

I highly recommend leveraging our local library resources when it comes to books, and in case it serves I have included purchasing links to each book.
